On Wednesday afternoon 23rd September our friend Andy Dobbyn passed away following a short illness and system failure believed caused by a kidney stone. This followed a recent hospitalisation with lung issues which had been a regular feature of his life for many years.
Andy was a widely loved club member for over 30 years and was the absolute epitome of a PIARC member.
Andy during those years had been a stalwart of the Recovery Team since 1995 and around that time formed the Service Crew of which he was Chief until his health enforced retirement in 2023.
Andy as Service Crew Chief organised the delivery of lunches and drinks at every meeting at the Island and Sandown. He also worked in the PIARC Recovery Crew at the AGP at Albert Park. Approximately 400 events overall.
Not only that, but he was the provisioner of the kitchen, post event day Bar-B-Ques and refreshments for all those years. Additionally, the cook, barman and kitchen maintenance man and confidant to many.
This only covers some of the activities he took on, aside from attending most Events and the years on the PIARC Board of Management.
As his health declined Andy decided to put his hand up for a more sedentary role which he could undertake at home and became our Membership Secretary, a job undertaken with great enthusiasm and good will in all aspects until his death last week.
Andy’s service and devotion to the club and its members was rewarded by being awarded the Winston Maguire Clubman of the Year 1998, followed in more recent years by a PIARC Life Membership and in 2024 a Motorsport Australia Service Award. All awards so richly deserved.
A life well lived for 64 years, with determination and good grace, albeit to short.
Nicki, Jake, Travis, Darcy and families, the Committee, Members and friends of PIARC extend our sympathies and best wishes to you all. A great man has left us.
